History
Ōfuna Station was opened on November 1, 1888 as a station on the Tōkaidō Main Line of the Japanese Government Railways (JGR), the predecessor to the post-war Japan National Railway (JNR). Initially for passenger operations only. The Yokosuka Line between Ōfuna and Yokosuka opened on June 16, 1889. Freight operations began in 1894. In May 1966, a monorail began operations from Ōfuna to "Yokohama Dreamland", an amusement park scheduled to be built north of the station. However, the project collapsed the following year, and the monorail ceased operations in September 1967. However, from March 7, 1970 another monorail began operations from Ōfuna to the south. This Shonan Monorail eventually connected the station to Enoshima. All freight operations were discontinued from Ōfuna from August 1972. On April 9, 1973 Ōfuna became a terminal station for the Negishi Line. With the privatization of the JNR on April 1, 1987, the station came under the operational control of JR East. A new station building was completed from 2006-2007.
